“Handel and Holly.” (December 2009)
The Christmas section of Handel’s “Messiah”, other sacred Christmas pieces, plus lighter Christmas carols and songs.
“Going Home” (May 2010)
This programme featured songs from around the world, on the theme of “Home”, interspersed with appropriate readings. Some our favourites were “Going Home”, “Shenandoah”, “Loch Lomond”, “Un canadien errant”, and “Streets of London”, many of which were arranged by Canadian composers.
Kaleid Choral Festival, with guest artists, Rajaton (May 2010)
The GJS was thrilled to be part of this excellent choral day, where we enjoyed the leadership of Jackie Hawley and Jennifer Moir. Of course, collaborating with the Finnish super-stars, Rajaton, was exciting! GJS was the only non-auditioned community choir to participate in this wonderful new initiative in the Ottawa choral community.
“Choral Mondial" (May, 2009)
We all enjoyed our return engagement at this great choral festival in Ville Laval. It was a wonderful weekend, with standing ovations and a warm welcome from the festival volunteers. We performed an evening programme in the beautiful sanctuary of the Soeurs Missionnaires du Sacre Coeur, a Sunday mass at Eglise Ste. Rose featuring “La messe Québecoise” by Pierick Houdy, and the Choral Marathon, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
“Rule Britannia” (Spring, 2009)
This programme featured many favourites from England, including patriotic songs, folk songs, Renaissance madrigals and motets, and pop hits. We had great fun, with special guests trumpeters Ruth Merkely and Carl Fraser. We were honoured with the presence of His Excellency, the British High Commissioner, who, it turns out, is a choral singer himself!
“The Colour of Music”
A programme of choral pieces all of which featured a colour! These included
“Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Hair”, “The Silver Swan”, “Lavender’s Blue”,
“Red River Valley”, “Yellow Submarine”, “Four White Horses”,
My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose”, and “Greensleeves”
“Celtic Connection”
A programme of Celtic choral music, built around a series of fictional ‘letters to the old country’, with guest Irish and Scottish dancers, a celtic harpist, a fiddler, and a piper. The songs included “Danny Boy”, “The Girl I left Behind Me”, “All Through The Night”,
“Flow Gently, Sweet Afton”, “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”, and “Annie Laurie”.
“Canadian, eh?”
A show of Canadian folksongs, including “Barrett’s Privateers”, “Canadian Railroad Trilogy”, “J’entends le Moulin”, “A la claire fontaine”, “The Grand Hotel”, “Burnt Land”,
Song for the Mira”, and “Fare Thee Well, Love”.
